Socrates
It is with a heavy heart that Socrates' family notified me that their beloved boy, who they adopted from me in 2002, passed away on March 19, 2010. Socrates was once in need of a home. The day his new family came to adopt him, his new life began. And what a wonderful life it was! He was loved and well-cared for and went to the bridge too soon.
Rest in peace sweet Socrates. Your family misses you and you'll never be forgotten.

Precious
A.K.A Pessy, Pess Pess

On July 13, 2000, I walked into the cat room at the local shelter. To my surprise, there was a senior long hair doxie, blind in one eye and not looking like she felt too well in one of the cat cages. I just looked at her and said "You are so out of here!" I hurried to the front desk to beat anyone else who might be interested in adopting her. As if there were a line of people waiting to adopt an old blind sickly doxie. I brought her home and put her up for adoption on my website. It didn't take me long to find someone who was interested in adopting her. But at the 11th hour, the night before the adoption, the lady called to tell me she had adopted a Schnauzer that was in jeopardy of being put to sleep and wouldn't be adopting my little girl. I was heartbroken that the adoption fell through and felt as if this poor girl had been rejected.
I tried a couple more times to find her a home but the last lady who came to meet her told me "this dog is yours whether you like it or not." Precious did not stop barking at her to go away. And so the little old girl settled in here with us as her permanent home. A few months later, at a doxie picnic, I was offered $500 cash for her by a senior lady who fell in love with Precious. But by then there was no amount of money that could separate the two of us. We hadn't decided whether to call her Honey because of her color or Precious because she was such a precious little thing until my husband said "she's Precious, that's it."
Over 9 1/2 years we became very bonded. She was the love of my life and I was hers. She was never happier than when she was in my arms or on my lap. I took her with me to pet adoption events and held her in her Critter Tote and she was like a people magnet. Everyone came to my booth to see her. Over the years she lost all her teeth so her tongue hung out the side. Some people thought she was ugly but to me she was absolutely beautiful. Never a day went by that I didn't hold her and tell her how much I loved her. The memory of the day I found her in the shelter always brought tears to my eyes. I thanked God every day that he brought us together. Whenever anyone met her they would says "oh she's precious." And I'd say "yup, that's her name."
Precious was loving, feisty, demanding, resilient and definitely spoiled. I would drive many miles out of my way to find a store that had the food that she loved. That little old girl went through a lot and always came through. At the approximate age of 17 1/2, she still had the energy to run around the house, hopping like a bunny. I was hoping she would just live forever. But on November 17th she suddenly developed a wheeze and a cough. A trip to the vet confirmed her lungs were full of fluid, she had probably aspirated and she had pneumonia. It was serious. I'd hoped the meds would help her but as the day went on and through the night, she had to fight hard for every breath. So on the morning of November 18th, I put aside everything else, wrapped her in a blanket and held her close and repeatedly told her how much I loved her. A half hour later she drew her last breath and took a big chunk of my heart with her.
Everyone should be so lucky to find a dog that lives in their heart and soul and have the relationship that Precious and I shared for 9 1/2 years. That little girl will forever live in my heart.

I loved you Precious. I know you knew that. I'll love you always.

Maxie
I received an e-mail from an all breed rescue telling me about a 15 year old doxie who was being left alone in a garage with no electricity and no heat and it was cold. They asked if I would take him. They informed me that he had medical issues that were not operable. I said I would take him and they delivered poor old Maxie to me. This poor old dog had a hernia that reached the floor, 2 other hernias, one inoperable and horrid teeth. Off to the vet we went with Maxie who was pretty much in his last days in his condition. The vet felt that she could remove the hernia, neuter him at the age of 15, and get rid of his rotten teeth.
Maxie survived the surgery and once he realized that huge hernia was no longer hindering him, he became a different dog. He became frisky and happy and just loved life and his foster home. Maxie was just too old to put up for adoption, we just wanted him to live out whatever time he had. Maxie even got so frisky, he tried to nip the washing machine repair man while protecting his new home where for the first time in his life, he felt loved.
We only enjoyed Maxie for 6 months before things started to go downhill for him. But he had a great life at the end, knew he was loved and we weren't about to let him suffer any longer than necessary. Maxie died in the loving arms of his foster mom who cared for him and played with him and laughed with him and gave him the kind of life he should have always had.
Maxie was special to us and to the rescue who brought him to our attention. Rest in peace sweet boy.

Farfel
On May 7, 2009, we lost Farfel unexpectedly and suddenly. He was 14 years old and my very first rescue. In 1996 I was asked to take a doxie whose owner wasn't caring for him and whose kids were tormenting him. He was kept outside or in the garage. His name was Stevie but my husband wanted to call him Farfel after the doxie puppet on TV in the 50's.
Farfel turned out to be our "psycho dog" who would bite if you attempted to do something he didn't like. He wouldn't let you pick him up and got worse over the years, so it was nearly impossible to take him to the vet, or give him a bath. But he loved us on his own terms, was happy to curl up in our lap and never let my husband Rob out of his sight. Farfel was a grouchy guy but he was smart as a whip and you couldn't pull anything over on him. He was also the best watch dog we had, never allowing any men into the house. If a stranger sat on the couch, he would get right in their face to check them out. Rob was the only OK guy in Farfel's book and curling up on Rob's lap was his greatest pleasure in life.
We gave him a good life, he knew he was loved and I just hope he's not biting the angels in doggie heaven.
Rest in peace Farfel. You were loved.

Gabbey Gabbey

Gabbey
This sweet precious girl that I named Gabbey was given to me to find a home for in August 2006. My husband called her "Squirt" and my friend called her "the mini mouse". She was about 8 or 9 years old, nervous, skittish and not affectionate at all. After getting to know her and realizing she probably had a horrible past, I made the decision not to bounce her around anymore and to let her live out her life here where she could just be herself and hide in the closet if she chose. She made great strides in the last 2 years, asking to be picked up, cuddling up to me in bed and asking to go with me to pet adoption events where she would pose in a little doggie bed on the table where people thought she was fake. She always did her little dance at dinner time.
We lost our precious girl today. I hope she knows how much she was loved and that she will always be missed. She was different and special and we will never forget her. She left us with such broken hearts. Rest in peace sweet Gabbey. We miss you.

Grampa
Grampa
Grampa was brought to me by Pug Rescue who found him wandering the streets. Several people estimated Grampa to be about 18 years old. His nickname was "Gampies".  He had no teeth but his greatest joy in life was eating. His hearing wasn't the best but he had a spark for life that continued for the two years that we enjoyed his company.  Grampa loved my husband and followed him everywhere.  Grampa will always have a special place in our hearts and he will always be remembered.  We miss the old grouch.

Rusty
Rusty
Rusty came into my life on May 28, 2003 and left this world on June 21, 2003.
Rusty was only a year and a half old and despite many trips to several vets, we were not able to find out what was wrong with him and not able to save him.  Rusty was such a sweet loveable boy.  So many people were drawn to him and loved to hold him. In the short time Rusty was with me he was loved by many and his passing brought tears and broken hearts from those who were lucky enough to meet him.  Rusty will always be remembered and have a very special place in my heart.  Rest in peace sweet boy.

Delilah
Delilah
Delilah found herself in her senior years in a local kill shelter because her irresponsible owners couldn't do the right thing and either care for her medical condition or put her to sleep. She was overweight but a very, very sweet girl who certainly didn't deserve to end up where she was.  Rescue bailed her out and took her to the vet to have her difficult breathing and coughing checked out.  It turned out Delilah had a herniated diaphragm which made it difficult for her to breathe. She also had a heart murmur. Surgery for her hernia would be very expensive and dangerous for this poor old girl.  When her condition worsened the decision was made to send her to the bridge to keep her from suffering.  Delilah spent her last few weeks in a home where she was loved and cared for and even got to go camping at the ocean which she really enjoyed.  Rest in peace sweet girl.

Gretie And Flash
Gretie and Flash were born on Easter Day, April 3, 1988, so they were nearly 16 ½ years old. They were a large part of our lives for so long, it’s really strange not having them here with us. We’d always said we though when one went, the other would go soon after, because they were so close. We always thought Gretie would outlive Flash, because she seemed so much healthier this past year, while Flash’s “slight heart murmur” developed into congestive heart failure. Last night I put our 2 Lab mixes (Rozi and Aussie) out in the kennel (they like to sleep outside when the evenings cool off and the house is still warm), and Clairie was already in bed with Keith, and I had only Daisy and Daphne with me and it was such a strange feeling. It’s going to take a lot of time and tears to adjust, I guess.

Pudge
This sweet girl was lovingly named Pudge by her foster home because of her roundish shape. She was rescued from a kill shelter at the age of 7 or 8 by an all breed rescue and turned over to Dachshund rescue. Pudge appeared not to have had a very happy life before coming to rescue and that's probably why her life ended too soon. Pudge never left her foster home but we hope Pudge knows she was loved and will always be remembered. Rest in peace sweet girl. There's lots of food in heaven.

Sunny
On March 2, 2006, at nearly 12 years old, Sunny Sunshine went to the bridge after a long illness. There wasn't a sweeter, gentler, more loving dog anywhere. Sunny lived her entire life in a house full of Dachshunds who used her and abused her by licking her, laying all over her, and just having their way with her. She never complained. In her younger, healthier days, Sunny was a therapy dog and brought smiles to the faces of the people in the senior center. She would roll over on the floor expecting belly rubs and the people would laugh. Sunny will always be remembered as a dear departed friend.

Lucky Ducky
After years of misery, Lucky Ducky was turned over to the local kill shelter at the age of 10. He was in horrible condition--no hair, sores and an old injured broken tail. After weeks in a loving foster home, Lucky grew a beautiful long coat of hair that covered up his crooked tail. His foster home lovingly called him Ducky because he waddled rather than walked. Lucky was adopted once but was not happy being uprooted from the first loving home he grew to know, and so he was returned.
Lucky had lots of medical problems including an enlarged heart and a touch of cancer. So, on May 22, 2006, Lucky Ducky went to the bridge in the arms of the one person he loved the most. Although his first years were not happy ones, he understood what love and comfort were in his last year. Lucky Ducky will always be in our hearts. Rest in peace sweet boy.

Sara Boomerang
Sara ended up in the local kill shelter in her senior years. It didn't take long to find her a home but after 2 weeks the lady decided she wanted to travel rather than take care of a dog. The lady's niece was a cat rescue and was happy to take Sara but, after a few weeks, she realized Sara was not happy in a houseful of cats. So Sara came back. An elderly man who had lost his doxie adopted Sara but after a few months, he became sick with cancer, so again Sara came back. By then she was nicknamed Sara Boomerang. The 3rd home was the charm. A perfect home for Sara with another Doxie, a big house and a family to love. But after nearly a year there were marital problems, and a house up for sale and no money for Sara's medical eye problem. Sooooooo, Sara Boomerang came back again. Another rescue contacted me and said she had a home for Sara. A senior couple took Sara and yes, it was her final forever home. They cherished her, brought her to the doxie picnic and she knew she was loved until her final days. Rest in peace sweet Sara Boomerang, you were loved by many and you'll never be forgotten.

Toots
Toots was a young beautiful rare mini brindle doxie who ended up in the shelter. Toots was such a sweet girl and very difficult to let go of. But, Toots went to a home with a wire hair doxie for a friend and a mom and daughter who loved her. After only 2 years Toots became sick and was gone in 48 hours leaving her family and me with a broken heart. Toots was much too young to go to the bridge. She was loved a lot in her short life. Rest in peace sweet girl.

Marius
Marius and his partner Fanny lived a good life in a loving home until a divorce caused Fanny and Marius's mom to contact rescue to find them a new home. That wasn't difficult because they were both precious and loving dogs. They went together to another loving home until Marius went to the bridge on Sept 30, 2006. He lived a good life and he will be missed by his doxie family and his human family and friends. Rest in peace sweet Marius. You made us laugh and smile.

Dolly
Dolly came to us a very sick little girl and was on several different medications for awhile. She got along very well with her 2 step Brother's Duke and Dodger and loved to go for walks with "the pack". When she came in from the outside she would bounce on the cushions like a Kangaroo until she reached the top of the Couch (very cute!) Liked to get in the Bay window and bark at the Mailman. Also, had a funny habit of sleeping with her tongue sticking out of her mouth. Dolly had a bad seizure followed by Kidney failure. We didn't know her age, but the Vet' thought maybe around 14. Dodger refused to sleep in his Kennel anymore without Dolly around.

Buddy
Sweet 10 month old Buddy ended up in the shelter. After rescue sprung him, it didn't take long to find Buddy a wonderful loving home. Unfortunately, right after he was adopted, Buddy came down with kennel cough from the shelter. When his new home took him to the vet, the vet said it appeared he may have distemper. While waiting for the results of that, Buddy's kennel cough turned into second stage pneumonia with lung damage. The vet felt he could pull Buddy through all of that but there was nothing he could do for his distemper which would hamper him for the rest of his life. So Buddy's family took the painful steps and with broken hearts sent Buddy to the bridge. Such a sad ending for such a sweet darling boy. You will always be remembered Buddy. Rest in peace sweet boy.
